Huntington Library]. Первоначально преподавал риторику и ораторское искусство, но вскоре обратился к истории США, прежде всего освоению Запада, написав докторскую диссертацию на тему "Характер и влияние торговли с индейцами в Висконсине" ["The Character and Influence of the Indian Trade in Wisconsin"] (1891). На съезде Ассоциации американских историков [ American Historical Association] в Чикаго выступил с докладом "Значение Фронтира в американской истории" ["The Significance of the Frontier in American History"] (1893), заявив о собственной теории Фронтира [ Turner thesis; Frontier Theory; Safety-Valve Doctrine]. Хотя эта теория поначалу оставалась незамеченной в сообществе историков, впоследствии Тернер обрел немало последователей; и сегодня практически нет историков, которые полностью отвергали бы его правоту.
